The network organises an annual conference, edits a journal and a book series as well as administering a 500 member international Listserve email communications site.

Recent Activities

The network has continued developing its website. This is currently managed by Bob Jeffrey. And network members continue to edit both a journal (Ethnography and Education: Routledge) and a book series (Ethnography and Education Book Series: Tufnell Press).

Both the journal and the book series have had a successful year. The journal has published several articles that originated as submissions to ECER and the most recent book series publication was jointly edited by people active on net 19 and also included chapters that originated in ECER presentations.

Net 19 organised an interim conference in Porto this year. This was organised by two of the network conveners (Sofia Marques da Silva and Bob Jeffrey) assisted by a regular presenter in net 19 (Paolo Landri). The conference explored ethnography of education in relation to online communities; including virtual ethnography, ethnographies of second life and computer technology assisted ethnography. The conference was well attended (colleagues from 10 different countries attended) and included both substantive and methodological papers.

A book of edited and peer-reviewed conference proceedings is being prepared from the conference. This publication under the title «Rethinking Educational Ethnography: researching on-line communities and interactions» is edited by Paolo Landri and Sofia Marques da Silva and will start a series of publications, coming from this type of annual conference initiative (between ECER and the Oxford Ethnography and Education Conference).

The network expresses its thanks to Sofia Marques for taking the initiative with the conference and for planning and organising and thanks are due also to Paulo and Bob for assisting her in this venture. A follow-up conference is planned for May 2012 in Barcelona organised by Fernando Hernandez a long-time member of EERA and regular presenter in net 19 at ECER. Net 19 convener Geoff Bright is organising a second conference and workshop on issues and problematisations of space in ethnography at Manchester Metropolitian University in June 2012. We hope to be able to contribute to the Emerging Researchers'conference in 2012.

Past Activities

Network activities have broadened over the years with member  participation in conferences between each ECER at which details of the  network and its activities have been presented. Several conveners of  ECER NW 19 attended The Oxford ethnography conference organised by Bob  Jeffrey, a founding convener of NW 19. Dennis Beach attended the TEPE conference in Umeå, Sweden. The network also works closely with a  scholarly journal, Ethnography and Education, and a publishing house  (Tufnell Press) with a house series on educational ethnography. Geoffrey Walford also represented all our work in ethnography and education at the AERA conference.

Future Activities

The second annual conference «Rethinking Educational Ethnography: researching on-line communities and interactions» will take place in the University of Barcelona, 7 and 8 of June, and it is organised by Fernando Hernández & Juana M. Sancho Gil, attenders of Network 19 and by convenors from Network 19. A second publication will come from this conference.

A small research project on Network 19 trends during past ECER (1999-2011) conferences was started and in the near future a document will be produced. This document could be a starting point for the EERA Council proposal of setting up some initiatives for celebrating ECER 20 years.
